About Green Hosting
Did you know:
- That the average server produces the same emissions as a 15-mpg SUV?
- That between 3 and 4 percent of all electricity (and the associated carbon emissions) used in the world goes to running computer data centers?
- That a typical avatar on a major online game like 'Second Life' consumes the equivalent amount of electricy every year to 2/3rd of a real person?
NOCO Hosting's dedicated servers are now all green - utilizing Renewable Energy Certificates (REC's) from 3Degrees. The wind credits are generated in Texas, where our datacenter is located.
‘Green Hosting’ is Not All the Same
NOCO uses wind energy to both power and cool our servers, but some green hosts only offset the electricity used to power their servers. That represents a big difference, because servers generate a lot of heat. For every watt of electricity that a server uses, 1-2 watts of electricity are typically required to cool it. What that means is that NOCO Hosting is investing in about twice as much renewable energy, on a per-server basis, as those green hosts only using renewable energy to power their servers.
How it Works
NOCO Hosting's data centers fund Renewable Energy Certificates that are verified, tracked and monitored. Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) are tradeable credits representing all the environmental benefits of 1 megawatt hour of renewable energy. That means NOCO doesn't own the wind farm, but for every REC purchased, that windfarm generates 1 megawatt of Texas wind power (why Texas and not Colorado? That's where our data centers are located) and puts it into the grid. When our data centers draw power from the grid, it can then claim credit for that wind power generated on its behalf.
